UPDATE: NEW software PS3 Media Server better than TVersity. Guide right HERE.
There are tons of guides to help you do this but I thought I would make a little guide myself for bloggers on WP. Most anime and drama series now use ASS/SSA subtitle format or the much more conventional SRT files so ffdshow would work for everyone. This method should also let you load an external srt subtitle file for your video. This guide should for for Vista 64-bit too.
- Download the latest:
- ffdshow, I use ffdshow tryouts
- TVersity
- _MatroskaSplitter.zip :32-bit | 64-bit | old link don’t use Haali
- _MP4Splitter.zip : 32-bit | 64-bit | old link to watch mp4
- Other links: 64-bit | unicode filter from celtic_druid

- Uninstall all your codecs first!! Uninstall Haali if you have it!
- Some has 2 versions available for the splitters.
For Windows Vista DON’T use Unicode.
Other version of Windows (i.e. 2000/XP) use Unicode.
This might have changed, as newer filters just have Unicode versions. Don’t worry, install and try for yourselves, if it works, good. Not? try another one. I have provided the old links just in case.
We have to install the splitters manually.
- Copy the file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory
- Open Command Prompt (Start > Run > type “cmd”)
- type “regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax”
- type “regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax”
- If done correctly, you will receive a success prompt.

- Make sure you have a Windows administrator account with a password. Somehow TVersity won’t allow transcoding with subtitles if your account has no password. (do this in Control Panel). Also make sure Media Sharing is disabled in Windows Vista via the Network and Sharing Center.
- Install ffdshow you’ve downloaded
- Go to “ffdshow video decoder” settings (Start Menu > ffdshow) and scroll to “Subtitles” section and make sure it looks like the picture shown.
- You should also change the Extensions priority to “srt, ass, ssa” or whichever your external subtitle type is.
- Please note that external subtitle file has to be exact same name as the video too.
- Then make sure transcoding is ON, also when adding folders to share in TVersity, make sure in Advanced setting the folder is set to “Always” and not “N/A”. This should make external srt subtitle work.
- Install TVersity. Did i forget to tell you this?

- install without TVersity codec pack and set as a service.
- Go to Start > Run > type “services.msc” to bring up the services window.
- Scroll down to UPnP Device Host and make sure it’s set to Automatic.
- Scroll down to TVersity Media Server, double click to open it’s Properties.
- You can set to Automatic or Manual. (i have mine set to manual)
- At “Log On” tab, click Browse > Advanced > Find Now and pick your account
- Make sure it’s set to an account (mine’s called Administrator) on the computer as shown in the picture.

- Edit TVersity settings for PS3. Did i forget to tell you this?

- Set the media device to Playstation 3.
- Set transcoder to always ON (you can disable transcoding for avi files as shown below).
- Resolution can be set to 1280×720 or anything smaller. (i.e. 1024×576, 704×396 as long as smaller number divided by larger number = 0.5625)
- Optimization: Quality, Wired Connection High and Minimum compression.
- Tweaking further, go to (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) and open the profiles.xml file in wordpad and edit the Playstation 3 section.
Change the video and onlineVideo from mpeg16 to mpeg2
<transcodeTarget audio=”audio/x-wav” video=”video/mpeg2″ photo=”image/jpeg”
onlineAudio=”audio/mpeg” onlineVideo=”video/mpeg2″ onlinePhoto=”image/jpeg”
adjustReadStartPos=”false” audioFailFutureSeek=”false” videoFailFutureSeek=”true” />
- If you have firewall, make an exception for TVersity’s mediaserver.exe.

- I notice the PS3 transcoding stutters once the bitrate reaches 9mbps or more, especially in my mkv files. There is a small solution to it. To fix it, I edit the config.xml file in (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) folder. These settings reduced the bitrate and audio quality but not noticable to my eyes. You can reduce the videoCompressionRatio to something lower. Try playing around with the values.
- <maxAudioInfo sampleRate=”48000″ bitsperSample=”16″ bitrate=”128000” nchannels=”6″></maxAudioInfo>
- <maxVideoInfo width=”1280″ height=”720″ bitrate=”4250000” fps=”30></maxVideoInfo>
- videoCompressionRatio=”18“
- downsampleForConnectionSpeed=”false”
- For avi files which don’t need to be transcoded just make sure you set transcoding as Never. Note that if you have external subtitle file, please set to Always instead.

- Start sharing and test whether it works!

- You can add srt subtitle file(s) quickly to AVI files using this tool, AVIAddXSubs. Using the small guide shown here.
- It muxes the files to divx and includes the subtitles. Press Triangle when playing the video and get the subtitle option. With this, you don’t need to share in TVersity, just copy into your flash drive and watch it.
- If you add the divx file in TVersity, it should work without transcoding!
Hmm, thats all i guess! There are other guides around the net just google around to find out which one works for you.

You say Haali messes things up…just curious, what does mess up?
From my experience, I used Haali splitter and streaming H264 and MKV files has failed. It just didnt allow me to stream the h264 files. After checking out tversity forums, they said to use Gabest splitter and streaming to my ps3 worked fine ever since. The thread i’m talking about would be here.
http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=11288
thanks for the guide i tried forever to get subtitles this did the trick.
However is there a clean way to add other codecs to be able to decode some other formats? The above method doesnt allow me to view some files i had no issues with using k-lite codec packages, such as flv files, also would like to view rmbv files.
marg: I think it’s possible to play rmvb files if you installed Real Alternative codec, As for Flv files, I’m not sure. Don’t think it’s possible yet for Tversity? Will find out more!
I have both Haali and Gabest installed. When i installed Haali i chose not to deactivate Gabest. This allowed me to stream my ogg files as well as mkv with subtitles active.
Great guide!!! I couldnt stream MKV files and did not know why. Now, it works perfectly!! Thank!! ;)
I can stream MKV files with subtitles with installed Haali splitter bt the others files i can’t manage to stream with subtitles (MP4,WMV,AVI,MPG)
THANK YOU!
I’ve tried to get this to work for ages!
With this guide it worked perfect first time!
Props from Norway
Everything worked perfectly for a month… All of a sudden I can not get to play with subtitles.
I have the transcoder set to always…
Help… anyone :(
try uninstalling the codec and reinstall everything again?
Everything back 2 normal after reinstalling everything..:)
Can some1 clear this out 4me though ???
Can I stream .srt subtitles with .avi files without transcoding them??
Cause I tried it unsuccessfully..
Hmm, as far as i know, it should work. Maybe try the tversity forums for some help. You should try AVIAddXSubs, really works for me.
http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php
Just follow the small guide and add the subs.
http://www.deanbg.com/AviAddXSub/
It does it real fast and confirm plays on the ps3. Oh, off transcoding too because the ps3 plays divx by itself. Hit Triangle and subs should come up.
Update! If you set the Ffdshow decoder settings according to the picture shown in the guide, try removing all the other subtitle filetype and keep “srt;ass;ssa” (whichever you need) and then set transcoding to always for the file in tversity. Make sure the SRT or ASS subtitle file is in the same folder with the same name. I’ve tested and confirm working with external ASS subtitle file for my avi video.
The real trick is the ffdshow setting for subs, get the right extension in there and keep the filename the same name as the subtitle name and in the same location. so “filename001.avi” and “filename001.srt”.
I scanned your document from start to finish before doing anything and above things are the only things that I modified for it to work.
Kay when i typed in regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax and the mp4splitter.ax, it says it was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0×80070005. I am running on a vista 64 and i kinda dont know what to do. Someone help me :\
hello, Try running as Administrator. Go Start, Search and type Command Prompt, then right click and select Run As Administrator, and type in the stuff. It might do the trick.
Not sure with 64-bit though. Maybe this will help? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932628
Also, I found a 64-bit Matroska Splitter. Have a go at it.

Hi, thanks 4 all the help !
I dowloaded a movie in .mkv got the .srt but they do not work.
The problem occurs only with this one movie, all other .mkv files work perfectly with .srt
What could be the issue?
I tried renaming the file with a shorter name…
Add to my Bookmarks :)
I have tryed that guide now 10 times. from scratch… And i still can’t get the damn thing to work, just no subs on the movies. Also tryed to hardcode the subs into the avi. but the program keeps giving various errors. Guess ther’s no way i can get it to work. Using Vista btw.
I tried all of this, but Tversity doesn’t even run any more. PlayStation says the data is corrupt, ffdshow doesn’t start up to transcode… :-( Nothing works. No media stream at all.
Yes, firewall exceptions and port mappings are okay.
[...] TVersity! You can find two good tutorials here and here. The most recent guide I’ve followed, here, helps set up subtitles as [...]
Awesome tip mate! I was wondering why srt files wasn’t getting streamed to the PS3… This worked perfect!
I suggest you guys who had problems change over to PS3 Media Server. Its the best out there right now!

Why go through all that trouble? lol
Download and install PS3 Media Server. It will play anything your throw at it including rar and iso files with video files within. By far the best solutions. Give it a shot! http://rapidshare.com/files/237312598/pms-setup-windows-1.10.51.exe
