Alright guys, PS3 Media Server is a new program so much easier to set up than TVersity. It’s Java based, works for Windows or Linux and capable of transcoding any HD content to your PS3 with subtitles on the fly.

Check out the features here.
Download it here. Latest version v1.10.5.
Okay for those people who followed my TVersity guide, you should install Vista Codec Pack and remove “ffdshow-tryouts” although it isn’t necessary. (Btw, I’m still using ffdshow-tryouts!)

- Install PS3 Media Server.
- Get and install AVISynth 2.5.7 from here (2.5.8 has issues)
- Install codec pack, I recommend Vista Codec Pack. (Btw, I’m using ffdshow-tryouts, installation tips right at the end of this page)
- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)
- Set “Autoload VSFilter” to Yes in Haali Splitter settings. *if necessary*
- Configure Haali Splitter (audio/subtitles language priorities) *if necessary*
- You can have optional codecs i.e. CoreAVC, Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

- UPDATE: v1.10.5 has improved Mencoder settings especially with subtitles, so no need to play with AviSynth priorities anymore.
- There’s nothing much to tweak for this program as it runs perfectly fine after install.
- Go to Navigation/Share settings and add the folder you want your video files played.
- Download “VSFilter.dll” here. Place it inside Avisynth’s plugin folder found in “Program Files/Avisynth 2.5/plugin”.
- Go to Transcoding Settings to change your Video quality, I use Good Quality and everything plays without stuttering.
*- Change “Avisynth/Mencoder” to 1st priority by clicking the Up/Down arrow on the bottom.*
If your PS3 detects the Media Server, everything should play up nicely!
Notes

- You can have .avi files with .ass files in the same folder with same name and they will detect just fine.
To install ffdshow-tryouts, download the latest:
- ffdshow, I use ffdshow tryouts
- _MatroskaSplitter.zip :32-bit | 64-bit | old link don’t use Haali
- _MP4Splitter.zip : 32-bit | 64-bit | old link to watch mp4
- Other links: 64-bit | unicode filter from celtic_druid
- Uninstall all your codecs first!! Uninstall Haali if you have it!
UPDATED ARTICLE MOVED TO HERE
- Some has 2 versions available for the splitters.
For Windows Vista DON’T use Unicode.
Other version of Windows (i.e. 2000/XP) use Unicode.
This might have changed, as newer filters just have Unicode versions. Don’t worry, install and try for yourselves, if it works, good. Not? try another one. I have provided the old links just in case.
We have to install the splitters manually.
- Copy the file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory
- Open Command Prompt (Start > Run > type “cmd”)
- type “regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax”
- type “regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax”
- If done correctly, you will receive a success prompt.

@Chris: what codec pack are you using? I watch tales of abyss too it worked for me. Assuming you’re using Vista codec pack, use the Gabest components and disable the Haali ones and see if subtitle works. Try another anime file and see if they work. I posted pics of my settings which might help.
i did what it says and it can play my anime MKVV’s preety fast but no subtitles…
tales of abyss :P
IMO THIS IS THE SHIT
your right..waaaay better then tversity :]
code geass looks too clear <3
actually its with JUST tales of abyss?
code geass/asu no yoichi/rosario to vampire all work fine and look excellent but tales of abyss PLAYS but no subs?
by the way the subbers were Osu!… im getting Weib just to see if the problem was just the subs in Osu! but i kinda doubt it cuz it works fine in my pc :/
and thanks you were very clear with ur instructions
but i use CCCP…i think thats the problem?
and haali >.<
i keep getting mixed opinions about gabest
can you clarify this for me please?
by the way thank you :]
lol sorry for the constant post but for some reason now i CONSTANTLY get a dlna connection error (2104)?
its really annoying because i have tried almost everything i read about this problem still nothing..
and it was just working fine too..
sometimes my ps3 wont even see the playstation 3 media server?
try restarting ur comp and ps3 maybe it’ll sort out just fine later. There’s no specific reason why haali or gabest is better than the other. I’ve had some hiccups with haali ones before and gabest been working great for me. btw, I still use ffdshow tryouts here and they’re great. Trust me. http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
this is just awesome. after reading your guide, i finally tried it out last night and it works a treat! much better than tversity for sure. though it does stutter a slight bit even when watching divx files over wifi. will have to play around more with the settings tonight. thanks heaps!
@davies
thx nvm it was just a problem with my router…
now ist working flawlessly again :]
i use tryouts too lol for some reason tryouts is the ONLY codec that gives me clean subtitles…
I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHOS TIRED OF TVERSITY !!
Works really well !!! Thanks for a great guide !
I’d like to run two instances of Media server – one with subtitles enabled, one with subtitles disabled. Is this possible ?
Hmm, i think it’s not possible yet. You can try something like this to your PMS shortcut,
“C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\PMS.exe” /nomutex
but I don’t think two servers will be created. AFAIK Tversity can’t achieve this too hmmm
PMS works great and it is indeed much easier to setup than Tversity. The only slight problem I have so far is that it takes a long time for PS3 to read the files (avi, mkv, mp3 etc) from the PMS. Tversity was much quicker on that part. Any thoughts?
This program works great for me, thanks for creating it. I did have one question, however. When streaming an .mkv file, the PS3 will automatically load the subtitles track, and when I attempt to disable it within the PS3 options, it tells me that there is no subtitles track. However, when playing on my computer there is indeed a subtitles track which can be turned off and is turned off by default. Does the PS3 simply automatically force the subtitles track and is there a way around it?
I think under Transcoding Settings in the program, you will see the bottom section called “Misc Options”. There’s a function called “definitely disable subtitles”. Try checking it and see if it’ll work. Interesting, I havent tried disabling subtitles while streaming. Will have a go at it soon.
That works great actually, I feel kind of stupid not seeing that setting myself. Thanks so much.
I tried just installing the PS3 Media Server along with the CCCP for an experiment. It seems to work fine, except for a few stutters for a few 720P and 1080P .MKV files. I think that is a transcoding problem or a connection issue since I use WIFI for my PS3. The CPU gets shotted up to 100% usuage whenever i try to play one of those. I use a C2D 6400, 2GB of ram, and an Nvida Geforce 8800GTS card. do you happen to know why this happens?
and is there any difference trying out the codecs you posted? btw is there any option to move the subtitles just up a little bit? some videos i’ve played, the subtitles are borderline on the bottom and it makes it hard to read. any replies back would be great!
hello there, I think you should try ffdshow-tryouts, they work much better with subtitles. Mine looks as though playing from the PC,
I use wifi to transmit to my ps3 as well and yes, 1080p videos will stutter. 720p will still be fine though, it depends on the bitrate of the video. Defnitely choose the correct settings, the average one does wonders for me. From your comp spec seems like it’s capable of handling all well, it just depends on how far ur comp is!
Make sure your ffdshow settings are like this: http://davieslim.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/ffdshow.jpg
I’ll update some stuff here but you can follow the early section of this guide, where it explains about the codecs and subtitle settings. Hope it helps.
http://davieslim.wordpress.com/2008/07/20/tversity-to-ps3/
yep. everythings working fine and dandy now but i had to put the video quality settings to medium quality for 1080p videos >.>
and im still having trouble reading the subtitles. its still cut off on the bottom making the story very hard to follow while trying to read it. is there some way you know to fix that?
Hmm, does the font turn out correctly but positioned wrong or both are wrong???
Have you tried checking the boxes in mencoder settings? make sure it looks this way (pic below). I assume it’s an mkv with embedded fonts, i watch anime and comes out right all the time. Also new version of ffdshow lets u play around with ASS/SSA config (in ffdshow video decoder configuration). Try that and see if it works.
Finally make sure ur tv receives the correct video aspect ratio. I had this issue with my samsung tv when the video was slightly pulled down making the subtitles much lower than it should be, I had to go to tv settings and set to auto-scan (16:9/4:3 bla bla) then everything fit in the tv correctly.Thats all i cant think of lol. Peace out.
